Jane Fischer: Helping Others With Disabilities in College

Jane Fischer is a wife, mother of three adult children, and grandmother of four. She has been married to her husband, Al, for more than fifty years. She taught elementary school before deciding to stay at home and raise her children. After twenty years, she earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Montclair University, with certifications as a Teacher of the Handicapped, and a Learning Consultant.

Jane felt strongly that children with special needs have an opportunity to attend religious school so she spearheaded the formation of a special class in her Temple. Suzy was the first child to be Bat-Mitzvah in the class. Jane is very involved with Jespy House, a nonprofit organization that enables adults with intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to lead independent lives. Jane and Al purchased a home in 2004 for Suzy and four other Jespy clients, which enabled them to live an “independent” life with the necessary support. Today, Suzy lives in a condo with adult supervision.

In episode 697 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out about Jane’s journey from elementary school teacher to special education advocate and now author of the new book “If You Knew Suzy”, why Suzy’s story has the power to change the way people think, what Jane means when she says “predictions are not promises”, what she would tell someone who feels like life isn’t going according to plan, what advice she would give siblings of someone with disabilities, how students can make their campus more welcoming for students with disabilities, advice for students who want to become advocates but don’t know where to start, how not to experience burnout as a caregiver, and what Suzy would want our college students to know. Tammie Osborne: What You Didn’t Know About Starting a Business

Before COVID-19 hit the US in 2020, Tammie Osborne spent over a dozen years as an in-demand nationwide healthcare technology executive and consultant, on the road nearly every week. Tammie knew she needed to uncover a new ‘normal’, one she hoped to find in a coworking space. She soon learned, however, that her corner of Middle Tennessee didn’t offer what she envisioned. So, in true entrepreneur fashion, she discovered a new passion: to create that which she was seeking and build a place where busy women could be productive without distraction, continue to grow professionally, socialize, and even exhale. The Sapphire Suite in Franklin, TN is fashioned as a destination—a thoughtful, welcoming place where women can crush their task lists and conquer new frontiers in a dynamic, nurturing environment of like-minded women. In this place, female strengths, intuition, and potential are organically recognized and nurtured; and women will always be made to feel both supported and inspired.

In episode 655 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out what drew Tammie into healthcare, what was the moment she know that she needed to build something new, how you know when it’s time to pivot, why designing a co-working space was so important in Middle Tennessee, how we can design spaces where people feel safe, supported, and inspired, how organizations can balance productivity and social culture, how college students can seek out mentors without feeling intimidated, what nobody told her about starting a business, and why you shouldn’t feel pressure to have your whole career mapped out. Dr. Mylaine Riobé: How can college students create their wellness plan?

Our next guest believes that the key to health and economic prosperity is to empower our younger generations to stay healthy rather than wait until they get sick to take action. As a board-certified integrative medical doctor with a special area of expertise in Eastern medicine and as a board-certified OB-GYN; and most importantly – as a mom of 2 amazing Gen Z kids, she has embraced the fusion of Eastern and Western medicine as the path forward!
