Amanda Black: Deeper Conversations in College

Amanda Black founded The Solo Female Traveler Network (SoFe Travel), a global community of 560,000+ rad women who travel solo. She designs women-only trips to offbeat places like hot air balloons in Turkey and cliffside monasteries in Bhutan, night markets in Egypt and dawn deserts camelback in Morocco. Amanda also studies how strangers become friends, the idea at the heart of her TEDx talk on shared-first experiences. Her work spans three projects: SoFe Travel (immersive group trips), Kindred (a community-building project for women closer to home), and The SoFe Travel Collective (an artisan-driven store supporting women artisans worldwide). Across it all, her focus is the same: build spaces where women feel braver, less alone, and more connected to themselves, each other, and the world.

In episode 667 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Amanda chose University of Cincinnati and joined Chi Omega, how being “the new person” shaped how she thinks about belonging today, what was the moment Amanda realized this was more than just a travel group, what exactly is “shared firsts”, how to have deeper conversations in college, why people feel lonelier in college, what is a practical way someone listening today can deepen one relationship this week, what role vulnerability plays in building connection, why safety is such a key ingredient in connection, and what it takes to turn an idea into a global community. Paige Babineaux: Where did the idea for Greek Town come from?

Today we have with us Paige Babineaux, a member of Chi Omega Sorority and a new member educator in her sorority. After graduation she married her high school sweetheart, had a baby boy in 2016 and another baby after that, and now she built the first digital swap shop for Greeks with her new app called Greek Town. We’ve been chatting it up online for a while now, and I’m just so happy to share Paige with our listening audience because I think her new product is really going to help sorority and fraternity communities all over the country.

On episode number 167 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Paige chose McNeese State, what was so special about Chi Omega, what is was like to be New Member Educator for her sorority, where the idea came from for Greek Town – the first and only all-inclusive Greek digital thrift shop, what types of products we can buy on the app, what the reaction has been from the Greek community, other ways students can reduce their expenses in college, new functionality she wants to add to the app, how she was able to get some viral TikToks, and her favorite restaurants in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Dr. Michelle May: What is mindful eating?

[podcast src=”https://html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/18626741/height/90/theme/custom/thumbnail/yes/direction/forward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/191970/” height=”90″ width=”100%” placement=”top” theme=”custom”]Today we have with us Dr. Michelle May! Her passion for vibrant living and mindful eating stems from her 20+ year struggle with food and body image. Despite earning a medical degree, completing a Family Medicine Residency, and sustaining a busy medical practice and family, she continued to waste time, money, and energy on yo-yo dieting.

Dr. May discovered that many of her patients were struggling too, and that the conventional approach to health doesn’t lead to lasting change. Now, as a motivational wellness speaker and Certified Speaking Professional, her interactive virtual and in-person keynotes and workshops deliver paradigm-shifting, yet practical strategies to promote a healthier, vibrant, productive workplace and community. She brings her personal and professional insights, humor, and authenticity to the stage to offer a compelling, constructive, and sustainable path to optimal well-being.

In episode # 138, we find out why Dr. May chose Arizona State University, why Chi Omega was the right organization for her, why her unhealthy relationship with food was her dirty secret, what is mindful eating, what is the Mindful Eating Cycle model, how we can get our organizations to be more responsive and less reactive, some strategies to enhance the well-being of our brothers and sisters, how we can add physical activity to our life even if it’s not currently a part of our life, and her favorite restaurants in Phoenix (this was an easy answer for Dr. May).
