Courtney Teasley: How are we going to end mass incarceration?

After ten years of practicing mainly criminal defense and making Nashville history as a judicial campaign manager, Courtney Teasley decided she didn’t want to wait until the next election to continue creating the change she wanted to see; she wanted more change, way faster. Now, she has converted her law practice into a full, PROACTIVE coaching and consulting firm where she can assist lawyers in starting their own criminal defense law practices with a trajectory to the bench, as well as train the community on how to represent themselves with a lawyer present by providing strategic defense case preparation.

In episode 403 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we will find out why Courtney decided to attend Middle Tennessee State University for her undergraduate experience, why Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was the right sorority, what made her want to go to law school, what it’s been like to have her own criminal defense law firm for the last 10 years, how Courtney was so successful as campaign manager for Khadija Babb, the youngest person ever elected as Criminal Court Judge in Nashville at the age of 35, how her books are critical for those disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system, how we’re going to end mass incarceration in this country, how we make a mindset shift from poverty to financial literacy, how we can ignite the activism of the world, and what are the types of organizations that Courtney has promoted that are proactively disrupting. Enjoy!

[podcast src=”https://html5-player.libsyn.com/embed/episode/id/18752180/height/90/theme/custom/thumbnail/yes/direction/forward/render-playlist/no/custom-color/191970/” height=”90″ width=”100%” placement=”top” theme=”custom”]Today we have with us Dr. Shyam Sriram! He has been involved in the fields of secondary and higher education since 2003. He has worked as a teaching assistant at a Hispanic Service Institution (HSI)); teaching assistant at a large, urban university; taught full-time at the largest community college in a Southern state; worked as an adjunct professor at a historically-black college; spent a year working at two private, Islamic schools in suburban Chicago; spent two summers working with inner-city high school students in Atlanta; and taken part in several, intensive grading workshops with Advanced Placement exams. He has taught dozens of classes; mentored thousands of students; and realizes now, more than ever, the need for quality professionals in higher education who are not just great teachers, but great administrators as well.

In episode # 144 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Shyam chose Purdue University for his undergraduate experience, what made the brothers of Alpha Chi Rho special, what it is like working with the students at Butler University as an Assistant Professor and as a faculty advisor for Phi Delta Theta, how we can better train our fraternities and sororities on equity and inclusion, how we can diversify our recruitment this fall, what are the do’s and don’ts of cultural appropriation, how we can get closer to a criminal justice system that works for all citizens of this country, and why people get so defensive when we talk about majority privilege. We’ll also get Shyam’s recommendation for great food in Indianapolis! Enjoy.
