Laurie Necasek: How can we improve our accessibility for college students?

Our next guest is Laurie Necasek. Laurie is an Accessibility Expert and Instructional Designer who provides a holistic approach to digital accessibility. In accordance with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), she can help you create content that is inclusive and accessible for people with disabilities. She bridges the gap between people with disabilities who are accessing online content and digital content creators who are trying to reach their intended audience. By working together to create content with accessibility in mind, creators can reach a wider audience and spread their message further than ever.

In episode 332 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Laurie chose the University of North Carolina – Wilmington, what is alternative text and how does it provide equal access, how alternative text can help you boost your fraternity or sorority website in the search engines, how to provide equal access and ensure your flyers and physical advertisements reach a wide audience on campus, an example of creating alternative text for a photo that we post on Instagram, how we improve the hashtags we are using on social media, how we can improve our physical access to our spaces for events from an accessibility standpoint, and how we rethink all of these processes within student organizations with greater accessibility in mind.

Today we are talking about physical disabilities on college campuses. We have with us two long time friends of mine, Shawn Humphrey and Joe Landicho. Both served as presidents of their Sigma Pi chapters (Carleton University and Rochester Institute of Technology), and both use a wheelchair.

We find out what a student with physical disabilities should consider when selecting a university, how colleges have improved for students with disabilities over time, what accommodations are helpful for wheelchair users in college, what would have made it easier to join an organization and contribute as a wheelchair user, ways to support students with physical disabilities, why the fraternity is important, and challenges in the workforce for those with physical disabilities. We also find the greatest spots to eat in Ottowa and Eastern Pennsylvania. Enjoy! Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9DKHJzESTk
